When I install Retropie onto my 8GB sd card and I load it up it all looks fine. But when I go to copy some game on it tells me there's not enough space. when I browse to my retropie installation in Windows explorer it tells me there is only 50mb free space on there - well short of my 8 GB.

Have I missed a step in the setup - is my sd card faulty.

This used to happen on older versions of RetroPie. When you write the RetroPie image to an SD card it makes the partition size only the same size as the RetroPie install - not a lot left over.

You have to expand the file system so it increases the partition size to the size of the whole SD card. You need to go into the RetroPie menu item, then select Raspi-config. This will bring up and blue screen with a grey window with a list of options. Select the first one - 1 Expand File System.

This will expand the file system and ask you to reboot the Raspberry Pi - let it do so and when it reboots the file system size will now be correct for your SD Card size.

Newer version of the RetroPie image (I think from version 3.4 onwards) automatically do this as part of the first boot process so you don't need to worry.

Hope this helps you out.

Ashley

yes - I got caught with this a couple of times when setting up installs for friends.

Like the admin said - newer versions do it automatically so no need to worry about it.
