RecalBox is actually short for RecalBoxOS – as it is itself an operating system (based on Linux). It uses EmulationStation as it’s front end once the OS has loaded and includes many emulators and tools to do the job of turning your Raspberry Pi into a retro gaming system.

The project is an ongoing concern and updates to RecalBox come pretty regularly. Being free and open source means plenty of people use it and are continually contributing to its development.

Not only can serve as a retro gaming platform, RecalBox also includes an embedded version of KODI – the media center software (formally known as XBMC) so you can use it to watch your favourite movies and TV shows.

RecalBox has support for the following systems:

  • Atari 2600
